11 Days Reading & Writing Program

Be part of the hope.
Be part of the future.

PROGRAM LAUNCH!!!

In February 2024, our partners in Haiti successfully launched a supplemental reading and writing program for students in need of additional support at Les Bons Samaritains school in Saint-Marc. The program is funded entirely by the contribitions our donors made during the 11 Days in Haiti 2022 campaign. Learn more below!

About the program

In 2022, the 11 Days in Haiti Campaign raised over $1,500 to create a grant that would fund teachers' innovative ideas to improve Ecole Les Bons Samaritains (LBS). Our team reviewed these applications and, in consultation with our partners on the ground, chose the project best fitting students’ needs for the 2023-24 school year.

The supplemental 11 Days Reading & Writing Program is the result of this award and is entirely funded by the contributions made to the 2022 campaign. Launched on February 6, 2024, the program is currently serving more than 100 students, identified through diagnostic assessments, in first through sixth grades at LBS who need additional support in reading and writing. The program aims to improve students’ calligraphy and ability to identify words, decode them, and understand sentences and texts.

The program will continue through the end of April 2024. Students participate in two supplemental reading and writing workshops each week throughout the duration of the program – an hour-long session on Tuesdays before regular classes and a two-hour session on Saturday mornings. Students will be provided breakfast before the Saturday morning sessions.

Given the current social, economic, and political crises continuing to grip the nation, workshop cancellations may become necessary for the safety of students and staff. However, any cancelled workshops will be made up.

At the end of the program, students in grades four through six will participate in an essay competition. They will be given an essay topic two weeks before the end of the program, and selected teachers in the program will serve in a jury to select three winners. Students will be rated on the technique, style, form, and content of their essays.

The program will culminate with a last day celebration, during which the essay competition winners will read their work, respond to questions from the jury, and finally receive their prizes. All participating students will also receive a certificate of completion for their hard work.
